Good afternoon! The readings for this coming Sunday are: Psalm 131; Proverbs 25:2-10; Hebrews 13:1-8; Luke 14:1,7-14. Wash your hands! It’s time for dinner! Your mom may have had strict rules about cleanliness at mealtime, but she had nothing on the Pharisees! Being clean for a meal in Jesus’ day wasn’t just about washing hands. It was about who you chose to invite to your table and who sat next to you. (Reminds me a little bit of my junior-high cafeteria. All about STATUS.) And then, Jesus upsets everything, and everyone by calling the entire arrangement backwards and WRONG.
Thought for the week: not all acts of kindness or collaboration are created equal. Some will require of us more risk, more humility, more grace than we are comfortable giving. And these are the acts that matter most to God. “He who humbles himself will be exalted.”
