Friends of God, this Sunday we will remember the life and ministry of Saint Matthew, the Apostle and Evangelist. The readings will be Matthew 9:9-13; Ephesians 4:7-16; Ezekiel 2:8-3:11; Psalm 119:33-40.

Matthew is one of those unlikely heroes of faith that you often find in the Bible. As a tax collector, he was a man of questionable character and bad morals. He made his living by skimming off the top of the taxes he collected. Yet he was also Jesus’ choice to become one of the 12 apostles. Jesus was not afraid to be seen eating with Matthew or his tax collector friends. Jesus was not turned off by his shady past. So Matthew is our proof that God can redeem anyone. And not just redeem them, but use them as instruments of his mercy and grace. Thank God for choosing Matthew, and thank God for choosing you!
